Gun man shot dead near White House while Trump was out of town

On March 9, 2025, at approximately midnight, an armed individual was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents near the White House following a confrontation. The incident occurred near the intersection of 17th Street NW and G Street NW, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. At the time, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.

Individual, identified as 27-year-old Andrew Dawson from North Manchester, Indiana, had been on local police radar due to suicidal tendencies. Authorities believe he intended to provoke a "suicide by cop" scenario. Dawson had one prior arrest in 2018 for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia but no other significant criminal record.

Local law enforcement in Indiana had alerted the Secret Service about Dawson's potential travel to Washington, D.C., due to concerns about his mental state. Upon locating his parked vehicle near the White House, agents approached Dawson, who then brandished a firearm, leading to the shooting. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital; his current condition remains undisclosed.

The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is conducting an investigation into the incident. No Secret Service personnel were injured during the confrontation.

This event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in protecting national leaders and sensitive locations. It also highlights the critical importance of addressing mental health issues and the potential risks they may pose when left unaddressed.
